[I am a writer]
"What do you do?"
At the immigration in Mexico, an officer asked me this question with a warming smile. I pondered. He didn't ask about what I do "for a living", or "for work", he simply asked what I do. A question that can be answered with so much width and depth.
I used to answer, "I am a scientist", or "I am in patent law, doing patent prosecution." These answers were formulated based on the fact that the salary in exchange of doing so enabled many of my life pursuit.
But these days, I no longer do anything under these two titles. I pursuit my life passion just because I love to do so. I am enabled by my own love and desire. I have learned that, if you really go do the things you absolutely love, the entire universe would conspire in enabling you to achieve your dream in the end.
"I am a writer. I write about my travel and my life in general."
He nodded, and said, "that's really nice." My passport was then stamped and returned to me, as this question was the only thing that mattered to him for welcoming me as a person.
Yes, I am a writer now. :) I am embracing this new identify! Well, technically speaking, that's my only income source at the moment anyways!
(I am currently in Cancun, Mexico writing my next article!)
